TUCSON ARIZONA BOYS CHORUS CANCELS POPS CONCERT
The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus 80th Anniversary Pops Concert scheduled for May 2, 2020 is cancelled. According to the Director of the Chorus, Dr. Julian Ackerley, “the cancellation came amid the order from Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman who announced the extension of school closures through the remainder of the school year. The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus is uniquely tied to the schools, and because of this it was in the best interest of the choristers and their families to cancel the concert”.
TABC Rehearsals – Remote Learning
In light of this development, all Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus in-person rehearsals are cancelled through the 2019-2020 season. However, to keep the boys singing to spread some happiness and insure they will vocally stay in tip top shape, the chorus will continue to provide services through remote learning using Google Classroom. The activities are opportunities for the boys to continue their music and to be engaged with chorus.
As of April 1, 2020, all other Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus activities are still planned including the tour and summer camps (depending on the COVID19 Coronavirus situation). The Chorus will continue to monitor the recommendations and alter schedules and future opportunities as
needed.

Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus Lights National Christmas Tree
The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus has been invited to perform at the Lighting of the National Christmas Tree at the White House. The event is coordinated by the National Park Foundation and the annual Pageant of Peace. Pleasant Street Entertainment is the production company organizing the lighting event that will be on Thursday, December 5, 5:00pm on the Ellipse of the White House.

This year, the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus will be featured on two solo selections; Carol of the Bells and It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year that will be accompanied by the United States Marine Band.
The National Tree Lighting has been a significant part of the Boys Chorus’ storied history with performances at the Pageant of Peace in 1963 with President Lyndon Johnson shortly after the Kennedy assassination and again in 1991 with President George H. W. Bush and the released Beirut Hostages. It was 28 years between 1963 and the 1991 performance. The 2019 appearance will also be exactly 28 years between 1991 and now. Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus 80th Anniversary
Founded in 1939, The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus commences the celebration of its 80th Anniversary. A special announcement was presented today at the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce State of The City Luncheon with Mayor Rothschild.
In 1939, little Jimmy Pfersdorf became the first chorister of the Tucson Boys Chorus under the direction of Eduardo Caso, the founder and first director. Over the last eight decades, the Chorus has gained worldwide acclaim as one of the elite boy choirs on the planet. Thousands of boys have participated in the chorus and chances are most longtime residents know someone who sang (or sings) in the chorus.
Drs. Jane and Julian Ackerley present check to TABC Board Chair Renee Shane Boyd. Dr. Ed Ackerley makes announcement.
As part of the 80th Anniversary, the single largest monetary donation to the chorus in its history was announced. Dr. Jane Ackerley and current director Dr. Julian Ackerley, who celebrates his 40th anniversary as director this year, are making a one-time gift of $100,000. The challenge contribution is to triple it – to help secure the legacy of the chorus for 80 more years.
Of special note during this anniversary year will be commissioned works, one by a former chorister Anthony Constantino, the October Musicale Regale, an engagement at the Fox Theatre, a performance with the Tucson Symphony, and an upcoming 80th Anniversary commemorative book. A highlight will be an Alumni Reunion at Homecoming in November as guests of President Robbins and the University of Arizona – where the chorus and alumni will sing the National Anthem at the football game.
The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus Chorus has grown over 80 years. There are five central choral groups: Cadet Choir, Training Chorus, TowneSingers, Touring Chorus, and the Young Men’s Ensemble. Neighborhood choral groups include: Northwest Voices in Oro Valley, Vail Voices in Vail, and Sahuarita Singers in Sahuarita.
In 1939, Eduardo Caso, emigrated from England to the West to create a boys choir rooted in the European tradition but uniquely American in sound and repertoire. Under Caso’s direction the chorus performed national radio broadcasts, concert tours of Arizona and the Southwest, and early television appearances, toured to Europe, Australia, across the United States, and sang at the 1963 White House tree-lighting ceremony. After the Chicago World’s Fair in 1950, a reporter hailed the boys as Tucson’s “Ambassadors in Levis”. In 1965, Jeff Haskell led the boys with a live appearance on NBC’s Bell Telephone Hour and TABC flourished for 10 years under Haskell including moving into the building on Pima Street. Dr. John S. Davis, a former boy soprano under the tutelage of Caso, was director for five years. In 1980, Dr. Julian Ackerley was named Director, bringing to the organization extensive teaching experience at all levels, including three degrees in music with emphasis on music education, choral direction and voice performance. Under Dr. Ackerley’s leadership, TABC experienced a boom in membership and activities. The Chorus has toured throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Western Europe, Eastern Europe and South Africa. Complementing the concert tours have been collaborations with national symphony orchestras, radio and television appearances, partnerships with diverse arts and cultural organizations, and numerous recordings. Further credits include performances at the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center and another appearance at the White House (this time with President George H.W. Bush) for the Lighting of the National Christmas Tree. Dr. Ackerley has taken Tucson’s Goodwill Ambassadors on performance tours spanning five continents and 25 countries. Last year the chorus travelled to Mexico and China.

TUCSON ARIZONA BOYS CHORUS HOLIDAY CONCERT
The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus will present its annual Holiday Concert on Saturday, December 17 at 3:00pm and 7:30pm at the UA School of Music Crowder Hall. Under the direction of Julian Ackerley and accompanied by a small orchestral ensemble, the choristers will perform music of the season including Christmas carols, sacred songs and Hanukkah selections.
A distinctive feature will be the joining of the Touring Chorus with the Young Men’s Ensemble performing movements from Magnificat in D by Johann Sebastian Bach. Other selections on the concert include Silent Night, Do You Hear What I Hear, S’vivon, Deck The Halls, Let It Snow, White Christmas and the stunning a cappella version of Carol of the Bells which has become a signature piece for the Boys Chorus through the years.
The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus Holiday Concert is a popular Tucson tradition that began in 1939 with a Christmas Eve concert performed by eight boys under the direction of founder Eduardo Caso. This year’s program features boys ages 6 through 21 who are members of the Touring Chorus, the TowneSingers, the Training Chorus the Cadet Choir and the Young Men’s Ensemble. Assistant Conductor, Gavin Ely, joins Dr. Ackerley in leading the singers.
The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, known internationally for its traditional boychoir repertoire and western flair, has performed throughout the United States and the world. Their local holiday concert is an established and popular event during the festive holiday season.
